Call for participants for The Ironing Board Project

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

I am seeking women to participate in a project I have been working on for about two years.  What began as a project as part of my MFA has become an ongoing and growing project involving collection, printmaking, performance and eventually publication.

The Ironing Board Project was born out of a desire to reveal and preserve a feminine narrative which is often overlooked in contemporary culture.  The multiple elements of this project, including collection, performance and installation, work together to illustrate and illuminate a narrative of the ordinary woman. There are few parameters for submission and detailed information can be found at www.theibp.wordpress.com or you can contact me and I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Please take a moment to visit the site, check out the invitation and consider participating.  I am currently preparing for the second performance which will take place in Kentucky in October.  I hope to find more venues and opportunities over the next year or so and will keep the blog updated as I find them.

Thank you!

Peace/Non-nuclear War exhibition

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

HI Everyone,

Thanks so much for getting the word out and sending postcards to the Peace/Non-nuclear War exhibition. 391 cards were received prior to my departure for Mexico City on Tuesday. This exceeded my desired 300 cards and amazing considering the short deadline and the summer holidays. Please check out the blog http://wcaartwavesinternational.blogspot.com/. You’ll be moved by the voices around the world coming together to speak for peace and against nuclear war. It’s a manifestation of people flexing their art activism muscle over this important subject.

Warmly,

Priscilla Otani

“still lives”, works by susan c. dessel

Susan C. Dessel’s exhibit “still lives” opens Oct. 1st, 6-8pm, Culpeper Gallery Abrons Arts Center (Henry Street Settlement 466 Grant St. at Pitt St.) The solo exhibit is made possible in part with public funds from the Manhattan Community Arts Fund, supported by the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs and administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.  Additional support provided by Henry Street Settlement and Jeffrey Ruhalter of Jeffrey’s Meat Market.

By Subway: F to Delancey, D or B to Grand St., J or M to Essex Street. Walk south to Essex, turn left on Grand. Walk 4 1/2 blocks to 466 Grand.Gallery hours:Tuesday - Saturday 9am - 10pm. Sunday 10am - 6pm. Closed Monday.

This new work includes an installation honoring the lives of the women among the first Jewish community in Nieuw Amsterdam (1654) and their female decedents through the mid-1800s.

Dessel’s objects combine beauty and functionality to represent each woman. The artist chose to make a toothbrush and its precursors as objects representative of the dignity of each woman as she strove to keep body and soul together in a strange environment. Each brush is symbolic of the women’s struggles to take care of the home and the family and to hold on to a sense of self while caring for others’ needs and wants.

The accompanying suite of drawings uses objects of daily life with a dollop of humor to depict serious issues faced by these 17th century women and refugees and immigrants still today.

For your information, I’m attaching a flier.  I hope to see the Women’s Caucus for Art of Greater Washington, DC at the sale.  Participation as a vendor is always welcome.
