Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

Dear Colleagues,

The WCA International Committee is collaborating with two UN NGOs, Ribbon International and KIK, on a mailart exhibition at the September 9-11, 2009 UN Conference in Mexico City. We are publicizing the Call globally to artists, concerned individuals, schools and institutions. We hope that you will spread the word within your chapters, schools and universitites. We hope you will create many postcards for this exhibition. The Call is posted on ArtWaves http://wcaartwavesinternational.blogspot.com/ and will be posted on the WCA blog. It is also pasted below.

Warmly,

Postcard Call for Participation: “Zero Nuclear Weapons, Zero Weapons of Mass Destruction: Create a Culture of Peace Now!”

KIK (Kulturel Information - Koordination), The Ribbon International, and Women’s Caucus for Art invite artists, mail artists, students, children, activists and concerned individuals, classrooms and organizations to create postcards for this year’s United Nations NGO Conference, “For Peace and Development: Disarm Now!”

Our postcard theme focuses on one of the major issues debated at this conference: “Zero Nuclear Weapons, Zero Weapons of Mass Destruction – Why? How? When?” Lend your voice to this debate. What does a culture of peace look like? How would you resolve conflict in peaceful ways? What does it mean to feel safe and secure? Why must we oppose the creation of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction? How can we remove these weapons? What can happen if we remain silent? What can change look like? Express yourself through words and/or artwork! Make postcards! Send us your postcards!

All postcards received by September 1, 2009 will be documented online and displayed together with The Ribbon International at the United Nations Conference in Mexico City in September, 2009.  Afterwards, this exhibition will travel to venues in the United States for further display and dialog.

Deadline: September 1, 2009

Artwork:  4”x6” or Size 6 postcards on the theme “Zero Nuclear Weapons, Zero WMD: Create a Culture of Peace Now!” On the back of the postcard, provide your name and State/Country so we can acknowledge your submission on the blogsite.

Teachers and Educators: We welcome classroom participation!

All Postcards will be documented  on http://wcaartwavesinternational.blogspot.com/.

No jury, no fee, no return. Postal delivery only.

A Parallel Presence
The National Association of Women Artist 1889 - 2009

I’m enormously excited to part of an exhibit at Rutgers University, entitled, “A Parallel Presence: The National Association of Women Artists, 1889-2009.” When some people find out that the artist behind my sculptures is female, many are surprised. Most don’t associate using a power sander with being a women, and it’s true, the field of sculpture – especially sculpture that uses heavier materials – is populated by a larger number of men. So that is part of the reason I am so excited to be part of this exhibit.

What makes this exhibit particularly fascinating is that it is not only contemporary artists, but contains art from NAWA’s entire history – showing both how art by women has evolved, as well as how that art has been regarded. Other artists I am proud to be in the exhibition with are: Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, Theresa Bernstein, Bessie Potter Vonnoh, Blanche Lazzell, Dorothy Dehner, Louise Nevelson, June Wayne, Pat Adams, Faith Ringgold, Idelle Weber, and Martha Walker. It is heady and esteemed company and I couldn’t be prouder to be part of this great organization and great tradition.

The show opening is on May 13th from 6-8PM, please RSVP to me directly via email if you would like to attend the opening.

The exhibit runs through the following dates:
When: May 14, 2009 - July 31, 2009
Where: The UBS Art Gallery in New York City, which is located in the UBS Building at 1285 Avenue of the Americas (between 51st and 52nd Streets) in New York City.

Sincerely,

Sculptor

NANCY WORTHINGTON CREATES WINE LABEL ART

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Planet Pluto Meritage wine (2005), released in April 2009,  was created by winemaker Clark Smith (of Vinovation fame), Winesmith Cellars, Sebastopol, CA, to honor Pluto–the absurdly demoted planet. The original artwork design for Planet Pluto Meritage was done by the internationally acclaimed artist Nancy Worthington, whose unique and controversial style has attracted thoughtful connoisseurs the world over with a gravity all its own. Her insightful and courageous art distills the essence of complex themes, sometimes social, sometimes political, sometimes romantic. Nancy Worthington’s dreamy artwork of Pluto the planet addresses all three realms as we stretch to reconcile science, tradition and our love for the ninth planet.

This delicious blend of Meritage varietals will rock your world!
