LA Photo exhibit :From the Land of Miracles by Wendy Sue Lamm

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009
  • A photographic reflection on the fragile balance of the daily lives of Israelis and Palestinians in peace and in war.

From the Land of Miracles
by Wendy Sue Lamm

Opening Reception Thursday, April 30, 6-9 pm

“Wendy Sue Lamm’s vision…does not so much frame the scene as enter into it, drawing us in as well and forcing us to participate… It is hard not to see these truly intense images as a powerful metaphor for the forces that tenaciously block the road to peace - a peace that would be a great sign not only for the Middle East, but also for the whole world.”
–Giancarlo Pauletto, Curator, Museum of Modern Art, Pordenone, Italy

On the heels of Secretary of State Clinton’s visit to the Middle East and the Israeli campaign in Gaza, photographer Wendy Sue Lamm offers an intimate perspective of everyday people caught up in world shattering events. Based on her internationally acclaimed book “From the Land of Miracles,” this extraordinary new photo exhibition opens April 30th at The Perfect Exposure Gallery in Los Angeles.

Assigned to Jerusalem beginning in 1994, Ms. Lamm has captured the heart and soul of Israeli and Palestinian life—the anguish and anger, hopes and fears—in a series of sensitive photographs that earned two World Press Photo Awards and the National Press Photographers Picture of the Year Honors.

Ms. Lamm’s work is exhibited in numerous museums and galleries in Europe and Asia, including Stockholm Stadsmuseet, Milan’s FORMA International Center of Photography, the Louvre in Paris, and Japan’s Asahi Museum. It is featured in international publications, such as The New York Times Magazine, Newsweek, Elle, Geo, Der Spiegel, L’Espresso, Republica, and Figaro. Her portraiture is highly sought after by major recording and entertainment artists.

Bigger and Bolder Watercolors with Atelier Interactive

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Hello artists!

Chroma, Inc. is happy to announce a new video on our website:  Bigger and Bolder Watercolors with Atelier Interactive, found at http://www.chromaonline.com/chroma/media_library/multimedia.  In this 2-part video, Chroma Teaching Artist Barry Sholder demonstrates his method of creating vibrant “watercolor” paintings using Interactive on full-sheets of watercolor paper. Bigger and Bolder painting is an Impressionistic style of painting that incorporates very wet paper surfaces and the brilliant characteristics of Interactive’s line of artist acrylics and mediums.  Materials and their use are explained, as well as simple compositional concepts that are easy to understand and executed, to produce beautifully vibrant paintings much like a watercolor…. only using acrylics. Perfect for beginners to professional artists who want to explore a new technique, Barry gives step-by-step instructions on how to achieve beautiful, transparent watercolor effects.

If you have any questions about Barry’s techniques or wish to schedule a free “Bigger and Bolder” workshop your college or art society, please contact Jennifer VonStein at jvonstein@chromaonline.com.

Thank you!

1% for Art project for the Keim Hall building

Monday, April 13th, 2009

Dear WCA,
I have a public art opportunity to share with your members.  Please see below.  Applications and additional information are available on at the NAC website at www.nebraskaartscouncil.org <http://www.nebraskaartscouncil.org> .

The UNL Keim Hall Project: The University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Nebraska Arts Council announce the latest 1% for Art project for the Keim Hall building, located on the UNL East Campus.  The UNL Keim Hall Project committee is seeking artist RFQ applications for this Nebraska public art project.

Keim Hall has multiple functions including classrooms, labs, research facilities and offices for faculty and government. Classroom studies include agronomy, landscape design, plant and soil science and professional golf course management. Administrative and faculty offices for Agronomy; offices for The Center for Grassland Studies (Professional Golf Management and Grazing Livestock Systems programs) as well as the USDA and Nebraska Statewide Arboretum are also located in the building.

The potential placement of this artwork project includes several site opportunities for artistic treatment, both indoors and outdoors. Images of these areas are available for viewing on the Nebraska Arts Council website (see link to project information below). Areas include the front entrance, first and second floor common areas, student lounges and a courtyard, among other possibilities.

The selection committee is interested in commissioned work or direct purchase of artwork for the site. Interested artists may apply for either one or both of these options. Details on how to apply are included in the prospectus.

There is no specified theme for this project, however both the building construction (LEED-certified) and the academic programs to be held within the facility are concerned with green, sustainable concepts. The selection committee encourages artists to explore these ideas in the construction and theme of their work.

RFQ Application deadline: May 18, 2009
Budget: $117,900

View and download an application form and view other information for this project from the Nebraska Arts Council website homepage.  See the clickable link on the bottom left hand side of the homepage at www.nebraskaartscouncil.org.

Letter to Open Arts Network Partners

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Dear Open Arts Network Partners -

It’s been a while since I sent out one of these emails!  We hope you’re all doing well, despite the recent economic downturn.

Quick ten-second update:

- Over 70 organizations are now a part of the Open Arts Network, which has recently received another year of funding from the NEA.  I have been to a few different cities around the country recently, and will be traveling more in the future, so let me know if you are interested in having me speak to your members at a workshop or other event.

- Fractured Atlas is doing well (we were recently featured on NPR!) with our over 8,000 members in 49 states (come on, North Dakota!), DC, and abroad.

- We are about to hire our 10th employee — a new program associate — and one of our current program associates, Emily Watts, will become our Director of Liability Insurance.

- Arwen Lowbridge, current managing director, will be resigning her position in a week and Tim Cynova, formerly of Misnomer Dance, High 5 Tickets, and Parsons Dance, will be taking her place.

- A few months ago, we merged with NYC Performing Arts Spaces (www.nycpaspaces.org), a database of rehearsal and performance space in New York City, and hope to bring this service to other cities and other artistic disciplines in the future (email me if you’re interested in participating!).

- Our Liability Insurance programs are growing extensively — take a look at some of our new offerings on our website under the Programs & Services menu.

- We will launch version 2.0 of our online course system, Fractured U., late this summer, which will boast ten new courses.  Keep an eye out for those!

Finally, some bad, but important news to report….

Fractured Atlas is having a temporary enrollment freeze on all health insurance plans in New York state.

Since 2005, Fractured Atlas has offered group health insurance for NY artists through HIP and PerfectHealth, two separate divisions of EmblemHealth.  In the past few months, HIP has begun enforcing stricter underwriting on eligibility. Unfortunately, these new rules are a lousy fit for most independent artists and creative freelancers.  Making matters worse, they recently announced their largest rate increase in history. Meanwhile, PerfectHealth has requested that we stop accepting new enrollments while they undergo some internal restructuring.  All things considered, we no longer believe it’s in the best interest of our members to continue promoting enrollment in these plans.  For groups with members/constituents affected by this change, you can feel free to direct them to other health insurance options for the time being or, alternatively, you can direct them to us and we can help guide them in the right direction.

Please note, current enrollees in NY and those outside of NY state are NOT affected.  Their plans will remain in effect until they decide to terminate or as long as their plans exist.

Fractured Atlas remains committed to addressing the health insurance needs of the arts community and, to that end, we will be restructuring some of our healthcare services in order to better serve our members.  This isn’t always easy, but it’s always important, and we’re not going anywhere. Stay tuned for further updates as we review our options and figure out how we can best serve our constituents.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns — email me directly at adam.natale@fracturedatlas.org.

Best,

Adam J. Natale
