Women’s Voices / Women’s Visions” Exhibition and Prize

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

CALL FOR ARTISTS

Second Annual Juried “Women’s Voices / Women’s Visions” Exhibition and Prize

Musique à la Mode announces a call for visual art entries by women artists to its second annual staging of “Women’s Voices / Women’s Visions.” The event is a concert-length program of music by women composers, integrated with an art exhibition. It will take place at St. Mark’s Church in Manhattan, New York on the afternoon of April 26, 2009. Selected applicants will receive a $50 honorarium and have their art shown in the “flash” one-day exhibition coinciding with the concert. Of the selected artists, one will be chosen by a guest juror to receive the Women’s Voices / Women’s Visions prize of $500. Selected artists can also choose to make their work available for sale, and will receive 100% of any sales of their pieces that result from the show.

Work submitted should be relevant to this year’s theme: “Dissonance and Female Experience.” Artists are encouraged to explore a wide range of interpretations for “dissonance”—whether the struggle toward selfidentity, a break from societal norms, or even a theme as weighty as war. Dissonance can be aural or visual, cognitive or sensory. It can be a breathtakingly unusual color choice, or a clash of societal roles. Can dissonance work to reframe the lives and experiences of women?

The jury will include curator and Artforum.com critic Dawn Chan, as well as Musique à la Mode program coordinators Laurie Rubin, Jennifer Taira, and Ed Klorman. Musique à la Mode reserves the right to take installation constraints into account when selecting artworks. Artists can submit up to three artworks for consideration.

To apply, send a CD of digital files that include:

- Photo or video documentation of each work

- A proposal which must include dimensions of work and any other financial or logistical installation constraints

- A resume and artist’s statement

- A check for the application fee of $25 made out to Musique à la Mode

DO NOT SEND ANY ORIGINALS

Please send all applications postmarked by March 13, 2009 to: Laurie Rubin • 310 West End Avenue #9C • New York, NY 10023. CDs will be returned only if a self-addressed, stamped envelope is provided. Musique a la Mode is not responsible for lost or damaged CDs. Applicants must also confirm that, if chosen, they can transport their work to St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowery at 131 E. 10th St on the day of April 26, or to an agreed-upon storage site beforehand.

Musique à la Mode is a cutting-edge chamber music ensemble that specializes in performing and programming new music and integrating the visual arts, storytelling, theater, and other artistic genres. More about the ensemble can be found at http://www.musiquealamode.com  . For more information, email info@musiquealamode.com

CAREER ADVISORY ROUNDTABLES

CAREER ADVISORY ROUNDTABLES

ArtTable Career Advisory Roundtables will be held in conjunction with the College Art Association at the Annual Conference on February 27, 2009 from 12:30-2:00pm in the West Hall Meeting Room 512, Level 2 of the Los Angeles Convention Center. This is a free session, and registration for the conference is not required.

Students and young professionals in Arts Administration, Museum Studies, and Art History programs are invited to participate in discussions regarding careers in the arts, hosted by ArtTable members from different spectrums of the arts community. Speakers will host a roundtable focusing on one of the following areas: Museum/ Non-Profit Directorship, Gallery, Curatorial, Art Education, Appraisal, Education, and Conservation. It is ArtTable’s hope that our roundtable program will allow students the opportunity to learn more about the variety of careers available to them in the arts.

There will be five roundtables at each of two sessions with one or two mentors per table, who will, after briefly introducing themselves, allow students to ask questions about their particular field.

Students will be asked to register in advance and to select preferred tables for both session one and session two.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions regarding this program.
