Report on discrimination today: or Sorry, the fight isn’t over yet! Total average of juried shows where Juror doesn’t know the name of the artist submitting the work:  42.5% males, 57.5% females; the Total average % of the invited artists (when the gender of the artist is known to the Juror, through 2003): 79.8% males, 20.2% females.

Examples:  In 2006 Fall schedules of “well-known New York galleries showed 77% males and 23% females. The Whitney Museum 2003 Biennial showed 79.8% males and 29.2% females;  the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s announced shows for 2000-2005 were 60% males  and 40% females.  Recent activity of the Guerrilla Girls West might change this with a new Director. Keep watching!

RE: teaching employment in colleges and universities:
In 1988 male full professors equaled 76% and women 24%; however, over the last 25 years the institutions have switched to reliance on students and adjunct (part-time) faculty to teach undergraduate classes.  Adjuncts teaching these classes changed from 22% in 1970 to 35% in 1992-93,  to 32% in 1998-99, but by 2004 a shocking 63% of new hires were adjuncts!  A disproportionate number - 50.5%- of part time teachers are women.  An academic labor movement has gained momentum as a result.      -Eleanor Dickinson
