2009 RAFFLE PRIZES
We’re fortunate this year, on the 30th anniversary of the awards, to have special artwork donated from opposite coasts, former Lifetime Achievement honorees, Betye Saar of Los Angeles, and Emma Amos of New York. Both are accomplished artists and collected by museums.
Emma Amos’ paintings, etchings and collages provoke and question assumptions about color, gender, privelege, and power. She is currently in “1968; THEN AND NOW”, an exhibit that runs through December at New York University’s Tisch School of Arts. In February 2009 she’ll speak at the CAA Conference in Los Angeles, about her experiences as one of the only women in “The Spiral” , a group of ground-breaking artists in the 60’s that included Romare Bearden, Norman Lewis and Charles Alston..
For our fundraising raffle, Emma has generously given us a monumental 26” x 41” collagraph with etching and collaged African cloth that’s valued at $ 3000,...it’s a richly colored limited edition print called “ZORA’S CHILDREN”, about Zora Neale Hurston and other notable women authors in American history.

Betye Saar is considered one of the premier assemblage artists in the country. Her unique imagery is a personal testament to family and faith, yet speaks to the universal struggle of all people who challenge rascist and sexist stereotypical myths. She is now showing at the National Japanese American Cultural Museum in Los Angeles in “20 YEARS AGO TODAY”, which runs through January 11, 2009.
Betye started her career in assemblage forty years ago in printmaking, so it’s an honor to receive one of her collaged prints for our raffle. She has donated a briliiantly colored limited edition lithograph titled “MYSTIC WITH SELF PORTRAIT”, 21” x 25”, valued at $ 1500.
